The Contenders

All three are built on the same 800V architecture (IONIQ 5 and EV6 share the Hyundai-Kia E-GMP platform; Model Y uses Tesla's own architecture), all three offer outstanding real-world range, and all three are among the most awarded EVs ever made. Yet they suit very different buyers.

Design and Practicality

IONIQ 5: The most radical exterior of the three — pixelated LED lights, a retro-futurist "parametric pixels" design, and a massive 3,000 mm wheelbase that creates genuinely limousine-like rear legroom. The flat floor with a sliding centre console is unique.

EV6: More conventional sporty styling with a low roofline and aerodynamic crossover shape. Less rear headroom than the IONIQ 5 as a result, but more dynamically exciting to look at.

Model Y: The most practical of the three — highest roof, most boot space (854 litres), available with 7 seats. Least exciting design, but the design prioritises space over style.

Performance

All three AWD versions achieve 0–100 km/h in approximately 5 seconds. In real-world driving this is more than adequate. The Tesla has a slight edge in sustained performance due to superior thermal management. The Kia EV6 has the most driver-focused chassis of the three.

Charging Speed

The 800V platforms of the IONIQ 5 and EV6 charge faster in absolute terms (220 kW peak) than the Model Y (250 kW peak, but real-world limited by battery temperature). At a compatible DC charger, all three add 100+ km of range in under 10 minutes.

Value in Nigeria (2024 prices)

  • Hyundai IONIQ 5 LR AWD: ₦27,000,000
  • Tesla Model Y LR AWD: ₦32,000,000
  • Kia EV6 GT-Line AWD: ₦26,500,000

Our Verdict

Buy the IONIQ 5 if: you want the most rear passenger space, the fastest charging, and a genuinely distinctive design.
Buy the EV6 if: you want the best driver's car of the three and the best value at this performance level.
Buy the Model Y if: you have a large family, want 7 seats, or are already invested in the Tesla ecosystem (Autopilot, OTA updates, app integration).
