EV Maintenance in Nigeria: What You Need to Do (and What You Don't)

Electric vehicles have dramatically fewer moving parts than petrol cars. Here is an honest breakdown of what maintenance an EV requires — and how much it costs.

What You Never Need Again

Owning an EV eliminates a long list of petrol-car maintenance items entirely:

  • Engine oil and oil filter changes (EVs have no combustion engine)
  • Spark plugs and ignition system
  • Timing belt / timing chain
  • Fuel injectors and fuel pump
  • Radiator coolant (most EVs use a simpler thermal management system)
  • Exhaust system and catalytic converter
  • Transmission fluid (most EVs have a single-speed reduction gear)

What You Do Still Need

Tyres: EVs are heavier than equivalent petrol cars and deliver instant torque, which accelerates tyre wear. Rotate every 10,000 km and replace on schedule — budget ₦80,000–₦180,000 per set depending on size.

Brake fluid: Annual check, replacement every 2–3 years. Budget ₦8,000–₦15,000.

Cabin air filter: Every 20,000 km or annually. Budget ₦5,000–₦12,000.

Wiper blades: Same as any car. Annual replacement, ₦3,000–₦8,000.

Battery coolant: Some EVs require a coolant check every 40,000–60,000 km. Our service team handles this as part of the scheduled check.

Annual Service Cost Estimate

A typical BYD or Hyundai EV annual service at our certified workshop: ₦25,000–₦45,000. Equivalent petrol car annual service including oil change: ₦85,000–₦150,000. The saving over 5 years: ₦200,000–₦500,000.
